If you try to pipe selected answer(s) from a rank question into the text of a follow-up question, the piped answers show as “Rank 1”, “Rank 2”, and so on. If you need to pipe in the selected answers rather than the rank you can create a recode with the answer options from your rank question, and then use the recode to pipe particular answers into the text of your follow-up question.
Example
You have a Rank Order Sort question called Fruit_Options with the following answer options:
- Apple
- Banana
- Orange
- Lime
Respondents are asked to rank each item and you want to pipe the answer that a respondent ranks as 1 into the question text of a follow-up question. In this case, a respondent ranks Orange as 1 so you want the follow-up question to say "Do you like Orange in smoothies?".
Detailed Steps
Access the References and Recodes section
- In the Surveys app, from the Activities page, select your power survey.
- On the Build page, click Edit to open Power Survey Authoring in a new browser tab.
- Click the Questionnaire tab.
- At the bottom of the Questionnaire Tree, click References and Recodes.
Create the Recode
- In the References and Recodes section, right-click on the study name and select Add recode.
- Name the recode and click OK.
- Enter the first answer option of your Rank Order Sort question.
- Click the filter icon next to Precode 1.
- Find the Rank Order Sort question that you want to pipe answers from and double-click it to add it to the filter.
- Click the Include tab.
- Click the gear icon and choose Add condition.
- Add logic for the first answer option. Using the example above, if the answer option for first rank is "rank1". The condition for the first row would be Fruit_Options_0 IS rank 1.
- Click Save.

If you want to pipe more than one answer option, click Add to add a new answer and repeat steps 4-9 above until required answer options are added. In this example there are 4 options to rank, so you will have to add an answer and set the filter for each option:
- Click Save on the top right to save the recode.
Note: To pipe in the answer option ranked as 2, repeat steps 1-11 to create another recode, add all answer options and set the filter for each option. The condition for the first row would be Fruit_Options_0 IS rank 2.
Pipe the Responses
- Open the follow-up question that you want to pipe the top rank into.
- Select the question editor and place your cursor where the piping should be added.
- On the menu bar of the Question Editor, click the Pipes icon.
- Find and select the recode created in the previous steps.
