The application does not support Grid type profile variables. However, if you have a Grid question that you want to use as a profile variable, you can add a Set Value action with a Profile action to your survey. This will recode Grid question responses and map them back to profile variable values. You can then use the Profile action like any other survey question for filtering, data analysis, and so on.
Example
In a survey for customers of a shopping center, you ask the Single Choice Grid question How often do you shop at these stores? You want to group together shoppers who shop at apparel stores all the time as Fashion, shoppers who shop at tech stores all the time as Tech, shoppers who shop at decor stores as Decor, and so on, and map these groupings back to a Shopper Type profile variable.
Detailed Steps
- Create a Single Choice Grid question.
To extend the example above, let's say you ask How often do you shop at these stores? The store names can be the rows and the shopping frequency can be columns. - Immediately after the Single Choice Grid question, create a Profile action.
- In the Survey Toolbox, under Survey Actions, click Profile.
- From the Select an existing profile list, select a profile variable, and click OK.
For example, you can select Shopper Type.
- Create a Set Value action by clicking the Set Value action in the Survey Toolbox.
- Nest the Profile action inside the Set Value action.
Your survey Table of Contents should now look like this: - Define the action rules for the Set Value action.
For example, if someone says they shop at Anthropologie, J. Crew, or Madewell all the time, you can set their value as profile Shopper Type = Fashion.
Your action rule may look like this: - Repeat step 5 for every combination of responses you want to map back to a profile variable value.
