AI Assistant for reporting: Visualization capabilities (beta)

Learn about the visualization options you can choose from to understand and interpret your report data.

The following sections outline the types of charts available, data presentation guidelines, and formatting standards used in creating visualizations with the AI Assistant.

Note: The visualization capabilities of the AI Assistant are distinct from the default charts available in modern reports. The AI Assistant-generated charts are useful when you require more customization or a chart type that is not available in the default charts. For more information on the default charts in modern reports, see Chart types in modern reports.

Chart types and data presentation

The AI Assistant selects the most appropriate chart type based on the nature of the data and the specific insights being highlighted.

Chart type	Description
Bar	Used for comparing quantities across categories. Suitable for displaying survey response distributions, rating scales, or comparing metrics across groups. Can be oriented vertically or horizontally based on data characteristics and readability.
Line	Ideal for showing trends over time or continuous data. Used for displaying changes in metrics across multiple time periods or data points.
Pie	Used to show composition or proportion of a whole. Best suited for data with a small number of categories (typically 6 or fewer). Each slice represents a percentage of the total.
Scatter plot	Used to show the relationship between two variables. Helpful in identifying correlations or patterns in paired numerical data.
Column	Similar to bar charts but with vertical bars. Useful for comparing values across categories, especially with time-based or ordinal data.
Area	Used to show cumulative totals over time. Helpful in displaying part-to-whole relationships in a time series.

Formatting and style guidelines

To ensure consistency and clarity in data visualizations, the AI Assistant adheres to the following formatting and style guidelines:

1. Chart components:
   • Title: Clear, concise, and descriptive of the data being presented.
   • Axes: Properly labeled with units where applicable.
   • Legend: Positioned below the chart for optimal readability.
   • Tooltips: Configured to show relevant information on hover.
2. Color usage:

   • By default, the AI Assistant uses the colors defined in the custom theme template. If a custom theme is defined for the report those colors are used instead.

   • Web-safe hex colors are used (e.g., "#008FFB", "#00E396", "#FEB019").

   • Contrasting colors are chosen to ensure readability and distinguish between data series.

   • Consistent use of 6-character hex codes for color definition.

3. Simplicity and clarity:

   • Focus on making data easy to understand.

   • Avoid cluttering charts with unnecessary elements.

   • Use appropriate data intervals and scales to accurately represent the data.

4. Consistency:

   • Maintain consistent styling across different charts within the same report

   • Use similar color schemes for related data across multiple visualizations

5. Accessibility:

   • Ensure sufficient color contrast for readability.

   • Avoid relying solely on color to convey information (use patterns or labels where necessary).

6. Interactivity limitations:

   • Charts are static and non-interactive within the AI Assistant interface.

   • Any desired changes or interactions must be requested through new queries.

When requesting visualizations, you can specify preferences for chart types or highlight specific aspects of the data you want to focus on. The AI Assistant will then create the most appropriate visualization based on these requests and the nature of the data, always adhering to the formatting and style guidelines outlined above.
