Ask participants to review a text-based, hierarchical navigation structure (a tree) and indicate where they would expect to find something.
- Tree Test questions are available in modern surveys only.

From the Survey Builder
Toolbox, under
Advanced Questions, do
one of the following:
- Drag the Tree Test question to the Table of Contents.
- Click the Tree Test question.
Note: A Tree Test question must be on its own survey page. -
In the Table of Contents, click the
Tree Test question.
The Edit Pane appears.

Optional:
Edit the
Question name.
Question names:
- Should be unique
- Can contain all alphanumeric characters and all symbols
- Are not displayed to participants
Note: The recommended character limit is 100. -
In the
Question text field, enter the question
text.
Note: The recommended character limit is 2500.
- Click Build New Tree.

In the
Build Tree dialog, create the navigation tree.
Note:
- Each node can have a maximum of 10 child nodes.
- Node labels have a limit of 100 characters.
- Node nesting has a limit of 10 levels.
- Type the node labels.
- Press the Enter or Return key to create a new node.
- Press the Tab key to indent a node and make it a child of the node above.

Alternately, click
Add Child Node on the right side of a node
to create a new child node underneath.

Click the delete button on the right side of a node to delete
it.
Any child nodes nested beneath are also deleted.

Beside the correct answer, select
Correct Answer.
In authoring, you can select more than one correct answer. However, in the responding view, participants can only select one answer.
For example, you ask participants, "Imagine you are checking our online grocery shopping website to see if there is a special promotion on your favorite beverage. Where would you expect to find the information?" Possible correct answers are Sales, Weekly Flyer, and Drinks, but participants can only select one of these options when they answer the question.
- Click Add Node to add a new top-level node.
- Click Save & Exit when you are finished.
- To make changes to the tree, in the Edit Pane, click Edit Tree.
Tip: Use these keystrokes to speed up the authoring process.- "Building the tree" refers to when your cursor's focus is on the Build Tree dialog and you are selecting or deselecting nodes.
- "Editing node content" refers to when your cursor becomes a blinking cursor inside a node.
Keystroke Description tab Nests a node when building the tree or editing node content. Shift+tab Unnests a node when building the tree or editing node content. left and right arrow keys Expands or collapses a parent node when building the tree.
Navigates within the text box when editing node content.
up and down arrow keys Changes focus to previous or next nodes when building the tree.
Navigates within the text box when editing node content.
space Toggles Correct Answer when building the tree.
enter Changes the cursor focus from building the tree to editing node content.
Once you're editing node content, creates new node on the same level.
esc Changes cursor focus from editing node content to building the tree. delete Deletes a node when building the tree. If the node has child nodes, you'll be prompted to confirm deletion. - Optional: Once you have authored your question, you can also:

To preview the question in desktop or mobile view, in the
Edit Pane, click
Preview.
A preview of your survey appears, starting with the selected question.Note: Preview in mobile view simulates the mobile experience. For best results, preview your question on a mobile device.
