How do I add MULTIPLE SETS of even distribution block in one study? (Power Surveys)

Tip: Random distribution and Least Filled concept testing are available for surveys! Both of these methods allow you to achieve even distribution without scripting. For more information, see Quick comparison: Random distribution, Least Filled concept testing, even distribution scripts.

Note: If you have not used any even distribution templates before, you must first review the instructions to set up an individual set in these two links in order to learn how to use the templates in this article:

To set up multiple even distributions in one survey, you cannot simply duplicate an existing even distribution block. This is because the application automatically adds 'Copy1' to duplicated questions, and many question names are referenced in scripts, which must be updated manually. To simplify this, we have a set of templates that contain multiple even distribution setups that are already renamed for you.

There are 4 separate templates within this article you can choose from, depending on your study requirement.

Please use the template with the lowest number of concepts that corresponds to your requirements, to avoid unwanted elements in your study (E.g. do not use the 40 concept template if you only have 5 concepts in your study)

• Template 1a - 5 sets, EACH will assign 1 of up to 5 concepts to each respondent (Pipe template).
• Template 1b - 3 sets, EACH will assign 1 of up to 15 concepts to each respondent (Pipe template).
• Template 2a - 5 sets, EACH will assign 1+ of up to 5 concepts to each respondent.
• Template 2b - 3 sets, EACH will assign 1+ of up to 15 concepts to each respondent.

You can combine blocks from more then one of these templates in one study, but we recommend keeping total number of concepts across all sets to be no more than 50 in one survey. (E.g. if you add one set from template 1a and one set from template 1b in your survey, that will be 20 concepts in total)

Detailed Steps

1. Import the necessary template(s) into your panel:
   • Download the PXML template:
     • For template 1a (assign 1 up to 5 concepts X 5 sets), click here.
     • For template 1b (assign 1 up to 15 concepts X 3 sets), click here.
     • For template 2a (assign 1+ up to 5 concepts X 5 sets), click here.
     • For template 2b (assign 1+ up to 15 concepts X 3 sets), click here.
   • On the Home page or Activities page, click New Project.
   • In the Activities section, under Power Survey, click Import.
   • On the Import Survey page to select the file, click Choose File, navigate to the file on your computer, and then click Open.
   • Give the template study a descriptive Internal Name. You will need to find this study in your library using the name, so make it as descriptive as possible.
   • Click Upload > OK.
2. Add the template to your study:
   • Create/author your power survey as required.
   • Go to the Questionnaire tab of your study.
   • Click Library on the Authoring toolbar.
   • In the Library Browser, look for the template study in the Studies section, under Pending Studies (the study you created in step 1).
   • Expand the template study in the Library Browser and drag over blocks you need into your Questionnaire Tree. EACH BLOCK IS ONE SET (e.g. Template 1a has 5 blocks. If you need 2 sets for your study, drag first 2 blocks into your survey. Place each block in the two locations where you want to ask different concept questions)
3. Set up Even Distribution:
   • For each block dragged over from Template 1a (assign 1 out of 5) or Template 1b (assign 1 out of 15), follow instruction in How do I evenly assign ONE concept to each respondent (Power Surveys).
     Note question names starts with EDS5_#_ or EDS15_#_ in this template, # is the Set number. (e.g. EDS5_1_CONCEPT)
      
   • For each block dragged over from Template 2a (assign 1+ out of 5) or Template 2b (assign 1+ out of 15), follow instruction in How do I evenly assign ONE OR MORE concepts to each respondent (Power Surveys).
     Note question names starts with EDM5_#_ or EDM15_#_ in this template, # is the Set number. (e.g. EDM5_1_CONCEPTS)
4. Validate and test your survey.
