In certain cases, the target question may not appear for participants when you use Carry Forward Answers. Instead, participants go straight from the source question to the question that follows the target question.
This behavior occurs under the following conditions:
- Only one answer option was carried forward from the source question into the target question. Perhaps the participant only selected one answer, or masking caused only one answer to be carried forward.
- The target question has no additional authored answer options to supplement the carried forward answers.
- The target question is marked as response required.
- Because there are no other answer options, the one carried-forward answer option becomes the default, auto-selected answer to the "response required" question. The survey automatically progresses to the next question.
- The target question is any question type except Allocation and Rank Order. Refer to the following table for details.
Although the one carried-forward answer option is auto-selected, it is not captured in reporting. This is because Next was never clicked, so the answer was never submitted and recorded.
Generally, setting the target question as "response not required" will allow the target question to appear.
Target | What happens when "response required" is true | What happens when "response required" is false |
---|---|---|
Single Choice | Target does not appear | Target appears |
Multiple Choice | Target does not appear | Target appears |
Single Choice Grid row | Target does not appear | Target appears |
