Scalar fields allow you to turn qualitative responses into quantitative values for use in statistical analysis. After a scalar field is created, you can create tiles in your dashboard that calculate the average value for the scalar field. Scalar fields are supported for the following question types:
- Single Choice
- Rating
For example, let's say you have a Rating question in your survey and want to calculate the rating that respondents provided. You can create a scalar field using the Rating question, and then add a tile to your dashboard that displays the average rating from the scalar field.
Detailed Steps
- In the Analytics app, open your dashboard.
- On the Data Management page, click the User-Defined Fields tab.
- Click Scalar Field.
- Click Create New.
- In the Scalar Field dialog box, complete the following steps:
- In the Scalar Field Name text box enter the name of the field to display in the Analytics field picker.
The name must be unique from the fields in the survey the data source field is associated with, and any other scalar fields associated with the survey. - In the Data Source drop-down list, select the survey or profile variable to base the scalar field on.
- In the Field drop-down list, select the field to map the scalar field from.
- In the text boxes under Value, adjust the values that correspond to the text under Options as necessary.
You can enter any number in the range between -9999 and 9999, and more than one option can have the same value. - Click Done.
Result: The scalar field is added successfully under the name you provided. It appears in the right-hand Selected Data pane listed under Scalar Field.
- In the Scalar Field Name text box enter the name of the field to display in the Analytics field picker.
- On the Data Management page, in the right-hand Selected Data pane, click Done.
The dashboard view reloads. - In the upper right corner, click the options menu and select Edit dashboard.
- Click Add > Visualization.
- Name the tile.
- Under Choose an Explore, select the data source you used to create the scalar field.
- Scroll to the Measures section and look for the scalar field name.
- Click the arrow to the left of the scalar field name to expand the section, and click Average.
- Click Run, and then click Save.
