Often, the answer label is not suitable to pipe in its initial form. In these cases, you need to recode the answer labels using a hidden question and a Set Value action. The hidden question is then used as a pipe in the follow-up question.
Example
You want to pipe in selected answers from a previous question, but wish to change the label so that it matches the context of the follow up question better.
For example, the Previous Question asks participants to select the preferred mode of transportation between these two options:
- I drive my car
- I take public transit
- Why do you prefer to drive your car when going to work?
- Why do you prefer to take public transit when going to work?
Detailed Steps
Create a hidden question
- From the Survey Toolbox, under Questions, click the Single Choice question.
- Enter a name for your question.
- In the Answers text fields, add the shortened answer labels that will be used as pipes to the follow-up question.
Using the above example, the answers will be:- drive your car
- take public transit
- Hide the question.
Create a Set Value action
- From the Survey Toolbox, under Survey Actions, click the Set Value action.
- Move the Set Value action between the hidden question and the follow-up question.
- In the Table of Contents, click the Set Value action.
- Create the Action Rule condition.
Using the above example, the action rules will be:
Pipe the answer to the follow-up question
- Go to the follow-up question.
- In the Pipe dialog, from the Sources list, select This Survey.
- From the Question or Variable list, select the hidden question.
- Click OK.
