In a survey, use Set Value actions and Survey Logic to prevent respondents from participating in a masked Rank Order question when only one answer option was selected in the previous Multiple Choice question.
Example
You want to create a survey about where tourists visit in Canada, and which province out of the places they visited did they like the best. However, you do not want respondents who have only visited one province to answer your Rank Order question.
Detailed Steps
- In the Surveys app, open the survey.
- In the Table of Contents, add the following question types in the order listed and on separate pages:
- Multiple Choice
- Set Value
- Single Choice
- Survey Logic
- Rank Order
Note: Add the Rank Order question to the Survey Logic.
- Follow the steps in the table below:

1. Multiple Choice |
Add answer options to the Answer Text field.
Example: You add the following answer options:
- Ontario
- Alberta
- British Columbia

2. Set Value |
- In the Set Value action, add an action rule for each answer option from the Multiple Choice question.
- In an action rule, you create the following condition.
Example
- In the Sources list, select This Survey.
- In Question or Variable, select the Multiple Choice question from the previous step.
- Set the operator to Is not.
- Select the answers Alberta and British Columbia.
- In the Set value as area, select the Single Choice question,
Note: Selecting the Single Choice question will apply to all subsequent action rules.
- Select Ontario from the Select Answer list.
- Repeat steps a-e to add conditions for the other answer options.

3. Single Choice |
- In the Single Choice question, add the same answer options from the Multiple Choice.
- In the Edit Pane, click More and select Hide to prevent participants from changing their previous answer.

4. Survey Logic |
- Create a condition to show the contained elements.
- In the Sources list, select This Survey.
- Select the Single Choice question in the Question and Variable list.
- Set the condition to Has no value.
- Set a condition to see the contained element if qualified.
- Select See contained elements.

5. Rank Order |
- Add the exact same answer options from the Multiple Choice question.
- Click Options and then, click Mask Items.
- Mask each answer option for it to only appear in the Rank Order question when the answer option is selected in the Multiple Choice question.
- In the Sources list, select This Survey.
- In the Question or Variable list, select the Multiple Choice question.
- Set the operator to Is.
- Select Ontario from the Select answers/values list.
- In the Then Show/Hide area, select Ontario from the Answers list.
- Click Add Another Set to add another answer option.
- Repeat steps a-f with the other answer options.
- Click Save.
